Making the holidays meaningful for your residents

December 2022

The holiday season is here! Facilities are bustling to bring holiday cheer to their residents. Decorations are being put up, holiday programs are being established and friend and family visits are occurring, all to bring holiday cheer to the residents of your facility. The last few years have been tough on both residents and staff alike, but many positive strides have been made to get back to a more “normal” way of life.

Keeping the holidays safe

Open visitation and relaxed requirements on communal dining and activities mean that once again, residents can enjoy the company of friends, family and each other. Infection control practices and principles still need to be adhered to in light of continuing potential COVID infections and an increase in influenza. Staff can help residents enjoy this festive season despite these potential threats.

Our own customs and traditions make it special

Find ways to make this holiday season memorable for your residents. Take the time to ask about and listen to residents share memories of holidays past. Find out how they celebrated and what traditions they held. You might find a new tradition to use with your own family! If allowable, you may even want to bring your family to spread holiday cheer to your residents.

Encourage your residents to participate in holiday preparations, whether it is assisting with decorating the facility or their rooms, or by providing ideas for holiday activities. Don’t forget to include and recognize different cultural aspects and customs when it comes to the holidays. It is always fun to learn how other cultures celebrate the holidays and this can be a good way to honor those cultures and incorporate new traditions in the facility.

All about family and friends

Find opportunities to involve resident families in holiday activities. Encourage visits and have family members be involved in holiday planning or activities. Invite resident’s family members that can sing, play an instrument or have a unique talent to come out and entertain the residents one day. There are always opportunities available to shine the light of the holiday season.

Don’t forget the staff

Staff are the backbone of the facility, ensuring that residents are not only cared for, but also cared about. The Compliance Store recognizes the work your staff does to make their residents’ holidays the happiest they can be. We thank you for your hard work and dedication and wish you a very happy holiday season.
